PROSTATE CANCER
Prostate cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system.
Most prostate cancers are slow growing; however, there are cases of aggressive prostate cancers. The cancer
cells may metastasize (spread) from the prostate to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph
nodes. Prostate cancer may cause pain, difficulty in urinating, problems during sexual intercourse, or
erectile dysfunction. Other symptoms can potentially develop during later stages of the disease.
The American Cancer Society predicts that this year alone, more than 185,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate
cancer, and nearly 29,000 will die from the disease. Age is the single greatest risk factor for prostate cancer,
with the 65-74 age group being the most likely to be diagnosed. However, men age 40 - 59 still have a 1 in 39
chance of developing prostate cancer, and men under 50 tend to have more aggressive forms of the disease. All
men should begin prostate cancer screenings at age 45.
